Wi-Fi keeps dropping

"Does the wired connection drop too?" is the cheapest test with the most information: it splits the problem in two, and you only have to narrow one half afterwards.

现象 · QUESTION

Home Wi-Fi drops for a few seconds every ten minutes or so — which kind of problem is it most likely?

已知线索 · CLUES5 条
  • Behaviour: drops for a few seconds, then reconnects by itself
  • Scope: phones and laptops are all affected
  • Distance: it happens even sitting next to the router
  • Timing: started about three days ago; stable before
  • Context: new neighbours appear to have moved in nearby
可能性排序 · HYPOTHESES概率为估计,不是结论
1. Channel congestion or co-channel interferenceabout 35%

依据:Whole-home impact and reproduction right beside the router fit interference; new neighbours usually add new networks

2. An overheating or ageing routerabout 25%

依据:Intermittent, periodic drops concentrated after long runtimes

3. The line or the modem (ISP side)about 20%

依据:If everything drops at once and the modem LEDs misbehave, the line side is implicated

4. A new smart device or a firmware problemabout 15%

依据:Appeared after adding a device; worth isolating or rolling back

5. Something else (power adapter, a loose network cable)about 5%

依据:Needs further evidence

怎么验证 · VERIFY
  1. Watch the modem and router LEDs when it drops (separates line from radio)
  2. Connect a laptop by cable for a while: does it still drop?
  3. If it is radio-side, try 5GHz or change the channel and observe
  4. Feel the router; power it off for ten minutes and retest
场景还原 · RECONSTRUCT

Channel congestion shows up as a stable wired connection and clearly better behaviour on 5GHz. An overheating router shows drops that come sooner the longer it has been running, briefly relieved by a power cycle. They differ on dependence on runtime.

复盘 · REVIEW

Split line-side from radio-side with the wired test, then separate congestion from overheating — three steps locate the specific component and you avoid buying a new router or arguing with support without evidence.
